This is not your preschoolers’s cartoon. SpongeBobSquarepants: The Broadway Musical tied with Mean Girls for the most-nominated Tony Awards in 2018—it had twelve. Featuring music by Sara Bareilles, Steven Tyler, They Might Be Giants, Cindy Lauper, David Bowie and Brian Eno, the Plain White T’s and more, the plot is also contemporary, as the residents of Bikini Bottom attempt to save their world from an existential threat, while others deny its existence and still others see a potential volcano as a capitalist opportunity.
